The Peder Sather Center for Advanced Study has awarded CSTMS Director Massimo Mazzotti and Professor Asdal of Norway $15,000 for their joint research project, The Berkeley-Olso Initiative in Valuation Studies. “Valuation studies” is an emergent field that focuses on the practices and politics whereby various entities (e.g. nature objects, market entities) are modified and ascribed with economic values in relation to markets. This project fosters the dialogue on valuation studies through a series of scholarly exchanges and workshops between the University of California’s Center for Science, Technology, Medicine, & Society (CSTMS) and the University of Oslo’s Centre for Technology, Innovation, and Culture (TIK).This grant will build links between several scholars at Berkeley and the University of Oslo over the 2014-2015 year. Workshops in each location featuring the visiting scholars will be announced later this year.
