The Center for Science, Technology, Medicine, and Society (CSTMS) at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applicants for an Academic Coordinator I in the area of science studies / history of science, at 75% with an anticipated start date of March 1, 2015. This is a one year position eligible for extension.

The mission of the Center for Science, Technology, Medicine, and Society (CSTMS) is to advance research and teaching on the intersections of science and society. It creates venues for interdepartmental collaboration, faculty-originated initiatives, and topical research units. It also supports development at both the undergraduate and graduate level, though it is not in itself a degree-granting program. The Center disseminates research findings via public outreach, an online presence, and publications. The intellectual foundations of the Center are the History of Science and Technology, Science and Technology Studies, and the Medical Humanities.

The Academic Coordinator’s (AC) position is designed specifically to collaborate and coordinate with the Center’s Director and the Steering Committee to realize Center’s mission through four main duties:

1. Maintaining a cohesive identity for CSTMS, including physical and virtual representations. This includes representing the Center among several University departments, affiliated academic, governmental, and private institutions, as well as professional societies, and the public.
2. Building and maintaining a vibrant intellectual program for the CSTMS community, including colloquia and working groups.
3. Grant-writing, which entails developing longer-term visions for CSTMS’s institutionalization and intellectual trajectory.
4. Building research programs that capitalize on the AC’s own interests, including being a Co- PI on grants and co-author on publications with other members of the CSTMS community.

The AC stays abreast of emerging and future trends in global Science and Technology Studies (STS) and History of Science and Technology (HST) scholarship, leveraging the intellectual resources of the Center to make it an active contributor to that conversation. In addition, the AC is expected to be conversant in a wide range of disciplines, from engineering to anthropology to history to rhetoric. In making the Center a home for research and learning, the most successful programs the AC runs will be the ones that have resonance across disciplines. Currently, there are several projects the Center runs: Science and Technology Governance; The Cloud and the Crowd; Nuclear Futures; and Gender and Science. It is expected that the AC will work both to sustain these and develop new projects of a similarly diverse nature.

Basic/Minimum Qualifications required at time of application:

• PhD or equivalent in Science and Technology Studies or a related field.

Additional Required Qualifications:

• Experience writing grant proposals.
• At least one semester’s experience developing and running an academic speaker series or a conference.
• A capacity to develop long term visions, including concrete 3-to-5 year plans for fundraising and academic output.

Preferred Qualifications:

• One year experience in institution-building, e.g., developing institutional linkages and forging consensus.
• Experience in web design.

Salary range for this 75% position is $52,344 to $63,0162 (full-time annual rate), plus benefits, commensurate with training and experience.
