UC Berkeley’s Innovative Genomics Institute has greatly expanded its research program to include exciting projects in biomedicine, agriculture, microbiology, and society. The IGI was created in 2014 as a partnership between the University of California, Berkeley and the University of California, San Francisco. Combining the fundamental research expertise and the biomedical talent at UCB and UCSF, the Innovative Genomics Initiative focused on unraveling the mechanisms underlying CRISPR-based genome editing and applying this technology to improve human health. Early achievements include improving the efficiency of gene replacement and foundational work toward a treatment for sickle cell disease. IGI is broadening its commitment to the scientific community, hosting more workshops and symposia, offering new core services, and funding potentially groundbreaking work. The new institute has announced its inaugural request for research proposals including proposals in the Social Science/Law/Policy/Economics. See more here.
