Colloquium

Trevor Pinch
Professor of Science & Technology Studies and Sociology, Cornell University

In this talk Professor Pinch will develop the notion of material performativity which involves a rereading of Goffman’s early sociology.  He argues that embedded in Goffman are notions of materiality and technology that need excavating. The talk will then turn to the newly emergent field of sound studies for clues as to the role of sound in interaction. Pinch’s talk will be exemplified by the role of sound in economic exchange, not only on modern financial markets but also on traditional markets.
