It’s that time of year again! Time to start preparing for the 2018 Annual STS Summer Retreat! We will be celebrating our 12th Anniversary, walking and talking again at the Nature Bridge venue in the beautiful Marin Headlands from June 8th to 10th, 2018.

We will continue with our successful events from the past including: STS in 2 minutes; dissertation proposal groups; mini-workshops taught by faculty; professionalization sessions (grants, jobs, writing, teaching); Slideshare karaoke; nature and beach theory walks; great meals and lots of coffee in collectable swag!

1) ATTENDANCE & REGISTRATION

Like in previous years, we will cap the attendance to 60 people –  first come first served (grads, faculty, and postdocs from California).

Since there are a limited number of spots available, we ask that everyone confirm their attendance by sending their registration fee of $160 no later than March 20. This covers room and board at Nature Bridge. Transportation is up to you.

Please register.

Please note that this year this fee is NON-REFUNDABLE. So please take the time to consider whether you are really able to participate.

Your space will not be reserved until we receive your registration fee. You may make your deposits payable to *UC Regents*

Send them to:

UC Davis
Science & Technology Studies
ATTN: Constance Suen
Room 1240, SSH Bldg.
Davis, CA 95616

*Please do not make your checks out to Constance; she’s happy to take your money, but unfortunately, that won’t hold you a spot at the retreat. If you need a receipt you may indicate with a note included with your deposit.

For UC faculty, the UC system does not want cash or checks exchanged between campuses. Instead, it wants money transferred directly through the UC system. So, if you are a member of UC faculty at another campus and will be asking for reimbursement from your funds at your campus, UC instead would like us to do a direct transfer of funds. Please ask
your departments ahead of time to plan whether or not you will be using UC funds before sending us a check. You can email the contact info for your accounting person to Constance Suen atcysuen@ucdavis.edu and she can arrange the transfers.

2) WORKSHOPS

We are working on some amazing workshops and will announce them as soon as they are confirmed. But please let us know who you think would be great to host workshops this year. Faculty or postdocs – if YOU are interested in guiding a workshop (1-2 hours) on a topic of your choosing and format as inventive or straightforward as you like (from interactive, role-playing and lectures to methods assignments, etc).

It is an open event on the topic of choice for the workshops leader. Previous year’s workshops have included “Mapping your STS”, “Latour and Matters of Concern”, “Innovation Studies and STS”, “How would you reconfigure an animal lab?”, “Robot artists and STS”, etc. For some older examples of workshops (homework etc) you can visit the STS CA Network webpage.

Please contact us immediately if you would like to host a workshop this year or have ideas for one. We would like to confirm the workshops as soon as possible.

3) FUNDRAISING and OTHER JOBS

If you want to help with other aspects of organizing, have ideas you wanted to see implemented, help us work on a “logo” or design, suggestions for evening activities, etc. Or if you want to help organize and spread the word around your campus, PLEASE join our organizing committee.

Also please let us know if you can help with fundraising. We realize that in these times it is almost impossible to ask for money, but occasionally there is still room in budgets near the end of the year. So if you can fundraise for the general retreat fund, please let us know and do so!

Feel free to contact Katherine Buse at kebuse@ucdavis.edu with any questions. Like in previous years, attendance will be capped to 60 people: first come, first served.

Since there are a limited number of spots available, we ask that everyone confirm their attendance by sending their registration fee of $160 (NON-REFUNDABLE) no later than March 20th. This covers room and board at Nature Bridge. Your space will not be reserved until we receive your registration fee. Please register.
