Emerging Technologies and Their Ramifications

The Emerging Technologies and Their Ramifications Working Group (ETWG) has as its goal to bring together graduate students and faculty from broadly varying disciplines across the UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco campuses, as well as from academic institutions and industry beyond.  We hope to create a productive space within this working group for cross-disciplinary conversation on the cultural, ethical, legal, and political ramifications of emerging technologies – from the points of view of social scientists studying the larger picture of developing sciences and from those of biological scientists and engineers developing these fields. What questions are raised by emerging scientific research? How are modes of federal or industrial regulation designed around these fields to both contain them and to expand them – and what are the processes by which these modes of regulation change or remain unchanged in the face of quickly developing technologies?
