The Market for Ethics: Exploring Variation Among Institutional Review Boards in the US and Research Ethics Boards in Canada Overseeing Clinical Trials

An estimated 10-15 million Americans participate in clinical trials each year, as do several million Canadians. These bodies that oversee and approve these trials are empirically understudied and largely invisible to both the public and research participants. This mixed methods projects explores variation between IRBs and REBs of different types, locations, and sizes. In particular, the project explores variation in legal and regulatory pressures between organizations in different jurisdictions, and explores variation in capacity among different types of research oversight bodies.
