Stuart Kandell has been called a “pioneer in the field of creative aging” and is nationally known for his leadership of Stagebridge, the nation’s premiere performing arts company of older adults, which he founded in 1978 and ran until 2013. He currently travels around the country speaking, training artists and replicating Stagebridge’s successful programs.

Kandell studied theatre at Northwestern University, received his Master's in Drama at University of Newcastle, England. In 1996, he was the first American to receive his doctorate in Intergenerational Studies from the Union Institute in Cincinnati.

He is a featured speaker at many national conferences, including the American Society for Aging, the Global Conference on Aging in Montreal, MetLife National Forum on Brain Health and most recently the keynote speaker for Senior Theatre USA.

Nationally, he has helped promote lifelong learning through the arts and the role of creativity in the aging process. He is a founding Board member, trainer and speaker for the National Center for Creative Aging;

 He is winner of many honors including the 2014 Sole of the Year Awardee from Barefoot Wines. Kandell and his work with the company have been featured on CNN, World Monitor TV, PBS and in many national publications and magazines. He lives in Berkeley and is an avid cyclist, yoga student and Argentine tango dancer.
