Professors Edward Beatty (Notre Dame) and Israel Solares (UNAM) are joining the Berkeley Workshop in Environmental History to discuss their new co-edited book, An Engineered World: The Role of Engineers in Global Modernity (MIT 2025).

An Engineered World examines the dramatic and global expansion of modern professional engineering between 1870 and 1950, with a particular emphasis on how engineering practices became critical to the technological, organizational, and political development of global capitalism and socialism.  This collection presents eight case studies of engineers’ work and interactions situated in local, national, or regional places but always intersecting with global influences.

Their presentation, "Engineers in the Anthropocene," highlights the intersections of the history of engineering with emerging questions of climate change and environmental crisis. For a pre-circulated excerpt from the book, please write to Matthew Shutzer (mshutzer@berkeley.edu).

This event is co-sponsored by the Berkeley Workshop in Environmental History.  The workshop is led by Matthew ShutzerRebecca Herman, Rebecca McLennan, and Bernadette Perez. CSTMS is also a co-sponsor.
