Javier Armas, STS/HST Working Group Co-Leader and current master's student in History of Science, was recently featured in a CBS News Segment highlighting his groundbreaking efforts to preserve the Mayan Mam language and culture.
Spotlighted in the CBS News report, Armas’s book Mam History: Oakland Notes on the History of Mayan-Mam Language, published on May 21, 2024, and winner of the 2024 Partners in Preservation Book Award from the Oakland Heritage Alliance, celebrates the history of the Mam language and its speakers.
Mam History was the result of a collaboration between Armas and a few of his students at Oakland Technical High School. The project honors the vibrant community of roughly 15,000 Mam speakers living in Oakland.
"Our project", says Armas, "was to create the first introductory level history of the Mam language."
