Gregory Radick
Professor of History and Philosophy of Science, University of Leeds

Please join us for a colloquium talk with Gregory Radick, Professor of History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Leeds. Radick will be discussing his most recent book, Disputed Inheritance (Chicago, 2023), in which he re-examines the famous feud that broke out among English biologists after the 1900 rediscovery of Mendel. Drawing on extensive archival research as well as a novel experiment in the teaching of genetics, the book aims to show that the Mendelian victory was far from a foregone conclusion, and indeed that, had W. F. R. Weldon, Mendelism’s chief critic, not died suddenly in 1906, the twentieth-century science of inheritance could well have taken a different path, with consequences for everything from education to eugenics.
