Agriculture and food systems; food justice/sovereignty/security; history and politics of technological change; science and democracy; normative frameworks for socio-environmental governance (e.g. sustainability, efficiency)

My research explores the history and politics of technological development and knowledge production in agriculture and food systems, with an eye toward democratizing these processes. Currently, I am developing a project to analyze emerging tensions between three distinct "progressive" trajectories in US agriculture -- local food, sustainable agriculture, and food safety -- through case studies of fresh produce supply chains. I also work on the history of soil fertility science and the development of the fertilizer industry.
