A journal of the humanities and social sciences founded at UC Berkeley in 1986, Qui Parle aims to publish outstanding theoretical and critical scholarship that crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries. Qui Parle’s mission statement emphasizes the political stakes of work we publish, our commitment to interdisciplinarity, and our interest in pieces that experiment with the form of scholarly writing. The journal historically published work in literature, philosophy, critical theory, and visual studies, but has expanded in scope in recent years to include political theory, anthropology, geography, media studies, and cognate fields. We are interested, among other things, in interdisciplinary studies of cultural alterity, media and aesthetics, race and decolonization, gender and sexuality, ethics and the environment, political economy, global political violence, theories of subjectivity, the philosophy and anthropology of science, minoritarian interventions in critical theory, and the study of secularity and religion.
Primary editorial duties include reading and discussing articles under consideration at our weekly board meetings, independently evaluating and writing reports on submissions, and working directly with potential authors to solicit, review, and edit articles. Ideal editors are interested in cultivating a robust community of graduate scholars and sustaining a historic, unconventional publication. Editors should plan to contribute 2-4 hours per week to the journal.
If you are curious about what it’s like to be part of the Qui Parle editorial board, we encourage you to reach out to the current editors.
To apply, send a single PDF containing the following to Managing Editor Helen Fortescue-Poole with the subject line “Editor Application” at helenfortescuepoole@berkeley.edu.
- A short C.V. or a brief resume of work experience and background.
- A cover letter of 1-2 pages specifying the applicant’s academic and editorial interests and experiences, any prior experience with editing, and reasons for wishing to join the board of Qui Parle. Please include a paragraph that answers the following questions: If given the opportunity to take the lead on a “special issue” of Qui Parle (see 33.1 “Ordinariness” or 32.1 “Totality and Culture” for recent examples), what would you choose for a topic, and which scholars would you solicit for a contribution to the issue? What is one interdisciplinary conversation or engagement you hope to help facilitate as an editor of Qui Parle?
