The DE in STS is a program of training in the social studies of science, technology, and medicine for Berkeley PhD students from any home department. Students who are accepted into the program, and who complete its requirements, will be in a strong position to excel within STS-related fields.

Students in this program receive a rigorous grounding in the studies of knowledge production and technological change. The program also facilitates a deeper involvement with the lively interdisciplinary research community at U.C. Berkeley dedicated to understanding the dynamic relations among science, technology, and social and political formations

Upon completion of all requirements and the dissertation, your transcript and diploma will read “PhD in [Home Department] with Designated Emphasis in Science and Technology Studies.”

The student must submit an application containing the following:

  1. Application for Admission to the Designated Emphasis in Science and Technology Studies (Google Form)
  2. A Statement of Intent (approximately one page) summarizing research interests, educational or employment background, and any related coursework in areas related to Science and Technology Studies. This will be entered in the Application for Admission Google Form.
  3. A list of taken or proposed courses the student will use to satisfy the elective requirement. (Students will have the opportunity to update their list by filling out the STS DE Update form.)
  4. A writing sample (e.g. a paper you have written for a U.C. graduate course) that is indicative of your research interests. You will be asked for the title and abstract in the Application for Admission Google Form. Please send your full writing sample to cstms@berkeley.edu and include “STS DE writing sample: [your name]” in the subject line by the DE deadline.
